This isn’t a fake movie concept created for an episode of the Apple TV+ series The Studio. A new trailer for Ron Howard’s latest film has been officially released. Titled Eden, the movie is based on the true story of European settlers who made their way to Floreana Island in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. However, despite what the title may suggest, the settlers in the film end up finding anything but Eden thanks to rising tensions with each other, on top of having to deal with the unforgiving elements.
In addition to being directed by acclaimed filmmaker, Eden boasts an incredibly talented ensemble that brings the settlers to life. Featuring the likes of Ana de Armas, Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, Felix Kammerer, Toby Wallace, and Richard Roxburgh, the trailer depicts island life as initially idyllic, until the eventual arrival of more settlers with greater ambitions turns the situation into a powder keg. It’s an intense trailer that doesn’t feel like anything Howard has directed before, especially since the filmmaker is well known for stories that usually uplift audiences.

How ‘Ballerina’s Original Script Could Have Made Ana de Armas One of the Most Brutal Action Stars Ever
Anyone who feels ‘Ballerina’ delivers a high body count, the original script would have broken records as well as bones.
One big standout from the trailer is de Armas as Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, whose more lofty lifestyle greatly clashes with the rest of the inhabitants on the island. Overall, it seems like the talented cast of the film are each putting on their own weird performances to further accentuate the intense and off-putting tone of the trailer. However, if first reactions to the film are anything to go by, it may not be enough to elevate Eden.
‘Eden’ Has Mixed Reviews, But Features a Talented Cast
Interestingly, Eden has already been released in select international markets, and the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024. Moreover, the distribution company Leonine released the film theatrically in Germany on Apr. 3, 2025, meaning that audiences outside the U.S. have already seen the movie. Eden has only recently been acquired for North American distribution, with Vertical handling the release. With some reactions labeling the movie as dark and chaotic, Eden could prove to be an interesting watch towards the end of the summer, now that it has set a release date of Aug. 22, 2025.
MovieWeb’s own review out of TIFF said that “Eden escapes Howard and writer Noah Pink’s hands like a runaway train with no destination, ultimately ending in disappointment,” indicating that despite all that talent and use of tension as seen in the trailer, the film still has its shortcomings. However, the one bright spot that MovieWeb critic Murjani Rawls found in the movie was Ana de Armas, who he described as “excellent” in Eden. Between this film and her role in the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, de Armas is set to have a diverse set of films released in 2025.
Vanessa Kirby is also set to make waves as Invisible Woman in the highly anticipated Marvel Studios release The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which hits theaters a couple of weeks before Eden. Despite mixed critical reactions to its festival premiere, Eden might be worth checking out for its intense premise and tonal shift from Ron Howard.
